Woop Its feminist Wednesday on Doorstopper.
Feminism is amazing, its attempting to free people from unneccesery social obligations, obv develop equality between sexes and its incredibily interesting, both to use as a viewfinder on oneself, seeing what harmful ideas one may hold (myself included) and to evaluate media bias, evaluating publications and adverts ect. This parody below is a brilliant demonstration of gender bias with UK tv advertising and is shockingly recognisable.
Alot of people seem to say ‘oh women have the vote ect, were all equal now what more do they want?’ But there is still;
A massive paygap between men and women at 16.4% (http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/may/28/women-lose-out-on-pay) which is slowly improving.
Threats to reproductive rights with alot of the Tory cabinet voting to lower the abortion time limit in contradiction to scientific advice (definatly a slippery slope).
Eating disorders. According to MIND ‘As many as one woman in 20 will have eating habits which give cause for concern; most will be aged 14 to 25 years old.’ (Media getting involved here too)
The above isn’t exuastive and just a geocentric UK viewpoint. Less developed countries especialy with islamic leadership (nothing like a heady mixture of authoraterian governments and authoraterian religion all mixed up) tend to fair much worse. The other thing about feminism is that it’s unavoidably linked into other struggles, race, civil liberties, sexuality and trans gender issues all tend to overlap at some points.
Those of us in the ‘punk’ subculture needed to join as a rejection of everything else, feminism is a rejectiong of bad habits and nasty ideologies, Bikini Kill showed us that the ideologies are entwinned. Also I’m a Male, it’s for everyone, play nice.
Stuff to read:
http://www.theseventeenmagazineproject.com/ Someone trying to live for a month or so following 17 magazine ‘The Ultimate Teenage Handbook”
http://www.feministing.com/ My favorite of the big feminist blogs-regular updates and lots to read.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beauty-Myth-Images-Against-Women/dp/0099861909 One of the most important books on femenism even though it’s 20 years old now its still very modern (unfortunatly)
Due to my recently imposed status as a man of pleasure i’ve been able to catch up on what I was missing from Uni; hours vacuously staring at a monitor. Yesterdays choice was ‘Roger and Me’ Michael Moores first documentary (Available on google video if you look right, not that i would P-) ), about his home town Flint, MI. The films narrative is based around GM shutting down its factories in flint and moving them to Mexico for the cheap labour, It was an interesting examination of wether companies have any obligation to a population or geographical region. If you work somewhere you do develop a sense of ownership about a place, it obviously doesn’t have a legal standing but one wonders whether there is more to a companies responsibilities than just payment for labour. Commoning rights or an equivalent are never granted anymore, and perhaps that was a good solution especially with the distribution of wealth being so so so bizarre (you seen that rage against the machine video).
Always nice to be stimulated, Zap.
“We told Warren this afternoon that we are going to look for a new drummer. Andrew, James and I made the decision a couple days ago over lunch. I told them that I didn’t want to play music with Warren anymore. They both agreed that this was a necessary step, it’s been a long time coming. Warren’s heart hasn’t been in this for a while now.” – Tom Gabel
What the fuck?
The devil horns are definitely becoming visible on Gabel’s head.
Well, there’s been a few turn ups this week.
The one that’s interested me most is the forthcoming release of “The Original Cowboy” by Against Me! on Fat Wreck, which is basically the demos from the bands second full length “The Eternal Cowboy”. I couldn’t help but ask myself “why are they doing this?” what with Tom Gabels solo record seemingly desperatly tryna win back fans who hated New Wave and the bands new direction, I can’t help but think this is another stunt. However, through my horrific elitism I can’t help but be excited about it. I never thought I’d buy a new Against Me! CD again.
This shit is genius.
Finally, The new NOFX record “Coaster/Frisbee” takes a few listens but it is good fun, and cheap. I can’t help but love everything this band does.

It fucking sucks. Zap came down to see me, so we went for a drive, and i managed to rip my sump off and blow out a tyre.
So I assume alot of people that read this blog have been taking an objective view of the G20 summit, particulary the medias portrail. It looks like the Man who died at the G20 was battered by police http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/05/g20-protest-ian-tomlinson there are repots from indymedia abut how CPR wasn’t administerd and First aiders were ‘moved on’ by cops. it sems pretty shitty to use this guys death as a political tool bu the wy its lookng is the Met killed a man at the G20, thas bad news for anyone in the UK. I really hope the IPCC look at this properly,

Hey, yesterday there was alot of protesting in London for the G20 summit. Someone died in a police ‘Kettle’ (a police cordon where protesters are forced into a tiny space and held for an indefinite period of time without access to food or water) and lots of reports of police violence are around, check out the DIY indymedia for more (they have a bias but there pretty honest about it). Here is a video from the Climate camp protest showing Police beat up protesters without provocation, it’s fucking shameful.
I’m writing a letter to Boris.
